It is Inktober again! The “rules” are:

Pick up a pen

Draw

Post it somewhere (the refrigerator works if you don’t do social media).

There are other October challenges that have grown up around Inktober and the 2 that I enjoy are PrintInktober and InktoberTangles. Print Inktober isn’t very active this year and it generally includes both gelli prints and block prints and I’m doing both. I’m really focusing on the Zentangle challenge. It is a lively and inspiring community on Instagram and I really enjoy it. I’m always amazed at how quickly my Zentangleing skills improve when I do it every day!

I am also exchanging some artist trading cards (ATCs) with Mel Beach who is the master of ATCs! Quilts are her love language and she is amazing at them. She shares her ATCs all around the world. I mostly only share with her. I have a few from other artists, but I haven’t gotten anything to organize them yet and I just have the energy to make art and post about it on Instagram. And sometimes I can teach or show it or mail a few ATCs to my Instagram friend. And I try to blog about what is going on at least once a month.

I’m so happy with how the Zentangled ATCs turned out! All of the stuff that I’m generating (that I’m not mailing to Mel) is going into a paper bag book that I created. It has lots of pockets and spaces to collage and put Zentangled goodies in.

Now I’m tired. Have a beautiful day!

This coming Saturday I will be teaching an art journaling class at the Art Hub in Cambridge, WI. We will start out altering a book to serve as our art journals and then we will do some gelli printing. After that we will use a stencil and black or white paint to create a line from stenciled images along the edge of one of the pages. Then we will cut along that line to make an interesting edge. A gelli print will go on the next page that will show off the cut edge. Coordinating papers will be collaged on the main page to create a cohesive layout with pen work to tie it all together.

The class will run from 1-4 pm and the cost is $65. All supplies are included and you will leave with a new altered book art journal for you to continue your art journaling practice in. The Art Hub is located at 145 W Main St. in Cambridge. There’s still time to register if you are quick! Register here.

I currently have art on exhibit at UW Hospital on 600 Highland Drive in Madison, WI in the surgical waiting area. It will be up until October 4. Hopefully you won’t have a reason to see it in person at the hospital so here are photos of the pieces that I will have in the show.

I had one piece, Dane County Garden, juried into the Art by the Foot exhibit at the Center for the Visual Arts in Wausau, WI. This show will run from October 3 through December 20. Here is their description of the show “So much creativity in such little space! Art by the Foot features a variety of artwork that is 12 in or smaller in size. A great show for collectors to visit.” There will be a reception on November 14, from 5-7pm.

Wishing you good health, safety, plenty and peace.

I call this piece Flourishing Spirals and it started with block prints of stamps I created inspired by a Golden Geometry class I took with Clarissa Grande. They started with the shape of the golden spiral and I ended up as a set of 4 stamps to create an embellished spiral. I only used the 2 largest stamps for this piece because I wanted white space in the center. I knew I wanted to enhance the prints in a variety of ways and I started with adding some water color on one side and gold paint on the other. Another form of enhancement that I had in mind was Zentangle patterns.

The above Zentangle tile is from a class I recently took. I participate in the monthly Tangle Lab online class with the talented Anica (ZenLinea) and I thought I could use these techniques on my block print. I really liked the idea of having components that went outside of the frame of the mandala. The subtle, simple background was very appealing to me, too. And I am a huge fan of Zentangled flowers, actually flowers of any kind.

Art with gold paint doesn’t photograph very well so I hope you will come to the Art Hub in Cambridge, WI to see it in person. The show will be up from April 1-26 and there will be a reception on April 4 from 6-8pm.

There is another opportunity to see me at the Art Hub in April. I will be teaching Art Journaling: Limited Composition & Mark Making ($68.00) on Friday April 11 from 6-9pm. All the supplies are provided and you will leave with a new (reclaimed) art journal with a start to art journaling. There are a few spaces left so register by clicking on the class link above.

Let’s transform old library books into lovely art journals. This class is perfect for someone just getting into making art but will also have novel techniques that will be interesting to the experienced artist. Learn how to repurpose a hardcover book using gesso, acrylic paint, writing tools and stencils.

We will introduce an element of play by using dice to make some of our design decisions. Our biggest decision will be on color selection. We will talk about the idea of using dice to take the pressure off decision making and as a way to limit your composition. We will talk about the value of setting limits when working in your art journal.

Art journals can be used in many ways to help you reach goals and improve your art skills, overall health, and satisfaction with your life. An art journal is a great place to experiment with art supplies and different techniques. We will do an art journal page layout using acrylic paints, junk mail or scrap paper and a variety of stencils, paint markers and pens.

Do you want to have an art journal that has pages with inspiration already on them?

Do you want to play with acrylic paint and stencils?

Do you enjoy found word poetry?

Do you want to start a daily art practice or rev up your current practice?

If you answered yes to any of these questions this class is for you. Join me at the Art Hub in Cambridge, Wisconsin. The Art Hub is located at 145 W. Main, Cambridge, WI.

This is an art class about working with what you have on multiple levels. We will transform old library books into lovely art journals. This class is perfect for someone just getting into making art but will also have novel techniques (or nonfiction) that will be interesting to the experienced artist. Learn how to repurpose a hardcover book using gesso, acrylic paint, writing tools and stencils. We will explore using what you find in the book for inspiration.

Gratitude is one of the key components in living a happy life. I focused on gratitude in my art journals for years, but they can be used in many ways to help you reach goals and improve your art skills, overall health, and satisfaction with your life. An art journal is a great place to experiment with art supplies and different techniques. We will do a simple art journal page layout using mostly just acrylic paints. We will explore layering transparent and opaque acrylic paint to create a harmonious composition. You will leave with an art journal that doesn’t have blank pages, ready for you to keep making art. You get to do all of this while you enjoy a beverage of your choice! (included in price with all supplies).

The EcoSquared Exhibit is going on right now at Hatch Art House. There will be a reception Friday July 12, from 5-8. I plan to be there and I hope to see you there. There is a lot of detail in these pieces that you can only see in person. What is EcoSquared?

“EcoSquared (eco for eco-friendly, squared for square art) focuses entirely on square works of art made with upcycled materials by local artists. This year will be a massive show of upcycled artworks with nearly 120 pieces made by over 40 Wisconsin artists.”

Hatch Art House is located at 1248 Williamson Street in Madison, WI. Their hours are M-F: 11am – 6pm,
Sat: 11pm-5pm, Sunday: 11-4.

I have started working with a new gallery, The Art Hub in Cambridge. I will have 2 pieces in the general exhibit for the next six months. I will have more in the August show 100 and Under. There will be a fantastic selection of affordable art, as the title implies they will all be $100 or less. (photos coming soon).

The Art Hub is located at 145 W. Main in Cambridge, WI. Their hours are Tuesday -Saturday 10AM-5PM. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Mixed Media Collage Oct. 19, 1-4
Altered Book Art Journal Nov. 22, 6-9
Introduction to Zentangle Dec 14, 1-3:30

This fall I will also be teaching at the Art Hub. The fall 2024 schedule will be available soon here.

October 19th from 1-4 I will be teaching a mixed media collage workshop. “Create your own floral collage. This class is an introduction to gelli printing and mixed media collage. It is for both beginning and intermediate artists. In this class we will use acrylic paint and a gelli plate to paint a variety of papers to use in a 5×7 floral still life collage.”

November 22 from 6-9 I will be teaching an altered book art journal workshop with a focus on gratitude. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. “Learn how to repurpose a hardcover book using gesso, acrylic paint, writing tools and stencils. We will explore using what you find in the book for inspiration. An art journal is a great place to experiment with art supplies and different techniques. We will do a simple art journal page layout using mostly just acrylic paints. We will explore layering transparent and opaque acrylic paint to create a harmonious composition. You will leave with an art journal that doesn’t have blank pages, ready for you to keep making art.”

December 14 from 1-3:30 I will teach an introduction to Zentangle® class. “In this workshop you will get the tools and skills needed to create beautiful, small works of art using the Zentangle® Method of drawing. This meditative art form uses quality art supplies and simple instructions to create patterns to explore non-representational art. You will be using a Zentangle® kit that includes a professional grade Micron pen, pencil, tortillion, and 5 Zentangle® tiles. You will have 2 small abstract pieces of art completed by the end of the class and the kit is yours to keep.”

Day 100 of the 100 Day Project Sunflower to support Ukraine

This year my project was 100 days of color fun. I painted in this coloring page for the last day of my 100 day project. It’s for sale in my Etsy shop and the proceeds of the sales will go to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee Emergency Response Fund to support Ukrainian refugees.

Here’s an overview of my 100 day project. Some of the color exploration that I did included mixing different color combinations in different brands of acrylic paint, playing with values of those colors or individual colors, gelli printing a whole rainbow of painted papers, compositions with a focus on value or different ways of making colors harmonize, combing color with Zentangle, much of it took place in the journal I created with Andrea Chebeleu from A Work of Heart Studio and some days just playing with color with whatever media I had at hand. And of course there are circles and flowers. Check me out on Instagram to see my full 100 day project @jeanette.clawson

It has been quite a year. I have not made as much art as I would have liked and I have had a lot of problems with my blog, but looking at my year in review I feel excited about what I have learned. I also feel a whole lot better after 207 medical appointments/procedures in 2018, including 5 hours in surgery. I hope next year is more productive and healthier, but here are my journal pages from 2018.

Zendala cover

I’m going to be teaching at the Morris County Art Association Studio again this year. We were asked to bring 2-3 pieces to hang in the studio so people from other classes can see our work. I have not done an altered book to hang on the wall since I moved to New Jersey! I found the book in an antique shop and when I saw it I knew it was perfect to showcase my Zendalas. I collaged over the text pages and used the illustrations as a background for my Zendalas.

zendala flower

zendala spoken

I hope you have some beauty in your day.
