In this 3-hour workshop we will take an old book and give it new life. This is an art class about working with what you have. Gratitude is one of the key components in living a happy life. Learn how to re-purpose a hardcover book, assemble an assortment of papers to use, and construct your very own altered book with pockets and collaged pages. We will explore using what you find in the book for inspiration and gathering materials from your everyday life that are meaningful to you to use in the journal. Take one or more workshop. I created this mandala with the prompt “Homer” for the Canvas Project at the Brooklyn Art Library. This year I plan to participate in the Sketchbook Project as well.

Homer in pieces

I went with Homer Simpson, rather than the classical interpretation. The mandala is inspired by Homer’s yellow head with black curls of hair. This photo shows the collaged canvas and the tissue paper Zentangled mandala.

This week the Diva Challenged us to recycle something for our substrate. She used a pizza box and treated it like a tan colored tile and inspired me to use a cereal box for mine. She also recommended we use a “Sunshine” string. So here is mine.

Surgery went well and I’m slowly but surely recovering. Hopefully I will be able to complete some more art projects in the coming days.

I hope you have a beautiful day.

DC354

This is the most current Diva Challenge. The challenge was to use the tangle pattern called Siri that was created by Simone Menzel.

I have been working on the Zentangle challenges hosted by Laura Harms, aka The Diva, but I haven’t managed to blog about them. In February all of her challenges were to uses hearts as strings and on one of mine you can see that and the other one the string mostly disappeared. Can you see where the heart strings were on my Zendala? This is Zendala 7 of 100 and mandala 56 of 100.

Here is the completed piece. I created the dahlia stencil from a photograph provided by Cee from her photography blog. I took some pictures along the way so you can see the work in progress. It will be part of an exhibit that will run all of March at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township, NJ.

geography gratitude

A few big ideas are included in this gratitude journal page spread. First, my husband picked up a 2018 calendar for our kitchen wall because our opportunities to get one at an art museum kept being thwarted. I had shopped on-line at the MoMA and Metropolitan Museum of Art’s shopping websites and the calendars were on sale, but the shipping seemed ridiculous. I had almost purchased a Mondrian calendar. When he called to say he was stopping at a store and asked if I wanted anything else, I told him a wall calendar. Guess what calendar he bought! If you have followed my blog for a while you may know that I am fascinated with grids and with Mondrian and he knows that, too. But isn’t it nice to feel known?

I have filled the grid with the ABCs of gratitude for beautiful places I have been. I may do one for places I still want to go. When I have insomnia I sometimes do an ABCs of gratitude in my mind. It can be for the day just past or anything I can come up with at 3 am. I know there are places I have left off of this grid, but I have really been to a lot of beautiful places! How blessed am I?

The right hand page is mandala 55 of 100. It is some variations on the Zentangle® pattern copada by Margaret Bremmer. She is such a talented artist and she has made some wonderful contributions to the world of Zentangle. I think I’m going to do some variations on this variation. I really enjoyed it. I’m so grateful for Zentangle® Inspired Art and all the good things that the world of Zentangle® has brought into my life.

I hope you have a beautiful day.

One of my friends and students (MD) gave her friend a private Zentangle lesson for the 2 of them as a birthday gift. We all had a wonderful time and created some lovely Zentangle art.

MD class number 2 tile 1

Because MD had already had a first class we did a variation on the first tile that they both enjoyed. We all enjoyed the diversity of our interpretations of the tangle patterns. The patterns we used are Crescent Moon, Hollibaugh, Bales, and Tipple. We really had fun with Tipple.

We nearly ran out of time to do a second tile, but we got a good start on a plates tile. For this one we used Cadent, Henna Drum, Flux and Onamato.

MD class number 2 plates

I’m confident you can recognize why this string is called a plate tile. If you are interested in having a private lesson with me please use the contact form so we can get started on setting something up. Happy Tangling! Have you made something beautiful today?

This is the Diva’s 7th anniversary of hosting the Zentangle challenge. Congratulations Laura! The Diva’s challenge was to create a holiday tile or Zendala. A Zendala is a Zentangled mandala. Join me this Saturday, December 16th from 2-5 to make your own holiday Zendala. Lets share a little holiday spirit while taking some time to meditate and create a small work of art. I will be at the Morris County Art Association Studio 10 Catherine Lane, Morristown, NJ 07960. There is a $5 materials fee that will include all that you need to create 5 works of Zentangled art. The class costs $40/$35 members per session. Please use the contact form on my website or call the Morristown Studio at 973-267-1722. I hope to see you there!

This is mandala 54 of 100 and Zendala 6 of 100.
