I will be teaching classes at the Art Hub in Cambridge, Wisconsin again this coming winter. Come in out of the cold and have some fun. The new schedule will be available soon. Keep an eye out here and on Instagram for updates.
I’m going to be teaching a grid art journaling class on Saturday, February 7th from 1-4, a Zentangle class on Friday, March 20 from 6-8 and how to make paper bag art journals on Saturday, April 25 from 1-4. My last post has an overview of my paper bag journal that I made for all my October activities. I have already made one to get ready for Carve December! I’m really loving this kind of journal.
Last Saturday I had a great Zentangle class at the Art Hub. We explored the tangle pattern crescent moon and played with flower options to create our own unique variations. Here is the mosaic from the class.
Today I was notified that a piece of mine was accepted in the juried show “Midwest Seasons” at the Center for the Visual Arts in Wausau, WI. It’s a piece I just finished called “Olbrich Summer Dreams.” The orchid stamps are inspired by the orchids at Olbrich Gardens and there is a map that includes the gardens in the background. It’s a combination of block printed flowers, stencils, Zentangles and a lot of different kinds of paper.
Next week I’m going to be demonstrating gelli printing at Crestwood Elementary (5930 Old Sauk Rd in Madison, WI) from 6-7 pm. It is part of their Explore Arts Night and I’m curious about how it will go. It looks like there will be eight other artists doing demonstrations at different stations. It seems like such a great idea. That same night is the first open studio at Kindling Community Art at my neighborhood community center and I hope to stop in there for a few minutes.
On Thursday, December 12, I will be participating in a holiday art shop at Weichart Realtors at 2045 Atwood Avenue in Madison, WI from 5-8. I will have a selection of handmade books and little coloring books as well as some smaller pieces of art that would make wonderful gifts. There will be 5 other artist there and I believe their work includes jewelry and ceramics in addition to wall art, prints and cards.
Then on Saturday, Dec. 14 I’m teaching an Introduction to Zentangle class at the Art Hub in Cambridge, WI. It costs less than forty dollars and you will leave with your own Zentangle kit. It’s not too late to register here. We will learn some introductory patterns and then play with them in some festive ways. The circles of paper are called Zendalas and you will go home with your own finished Zendala.
After all that in one week I will be ready to rest. However it is Carve December on Instagram and I’m trying to carve a block/stamp every day. I think I may need to take a few days off next week. I’m also still working on my 100 mandalas challenge and I’m trying to use my new blocks to make mandalas. I have been taking a class from Clarissa Grande on Golden Geometry and it is fascinating. I will have a lot more to post about that class when I get caught up, but in the meantime I’m carving blocks to create golden spiral mandalas. The bottom 3 prints are the beginning of that and I have so many ideas of how to use them!
This is my most recent big piece and I call it Blue Skies. It’s kind of ironic because my sun sensitivity this summer was really bad so I stayed inside and worked on this off and on since June. The central picture is very early in the process and is mostly the original block print. I added Zentangles and watercolor and acrylics and colored pencils and I am calling it a mixed media monoprint. I think I’m going to submit it for an exhibit at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in January. At least every other week I walk past the place that local art is exhibited. Seeing my own art in medical facilities I go to was one of my main goals when I started making art again 10 years ago. It makes me so happy to share it with the nurses and medical professionals and they love it too. It makes us all more three dimensional to each other.

One of my friends and students (MD) gave her friend a private Zentangle lesson for the 2 of them as a birthday gift. We all had a wonderful time and created some lovely Zentangle art.
Because MD had already had a first class we did a variation on the first tile that they both enjoyed. We all enjoyed the diversity of our interpretations of the tangle patterns. The patterns we used are Crescent Moon, Hollibaugh, Bales, and Tipple. We really had fun with Tipple.
We nearly ran out of time to do a second tile, but we got a good start on a plates tile. For this one we used Cadent, Henna Drum, Flux and Onamato.
I’m confident you can recognize why this string is called a plate tile. If you are interested in having a private lesson with me please use the contact form so we can get started on setting something up. Happy Tangling! Have you made something beautiful today?
This is the Diva’s 7th anniversary of hosting the Zentangle challenge. Congratulations Laura! The Diva’s challenge was to create a holiday tile or Zendala. A Zendala is a Zentangled mandala. Join me this Saturday, December 16th from 2-5 to make your own holiday Zendala. Lets share a little holiday spirit while taking some time to meditate and create a small work of art. I will be at the Morris County Art Association Studio 10 Catherine Lane, Morristown, NJ 07960. There is a $5 materials fee that will include all that you need to create 5 works of Zentangled art. The class costs $40/$35 members per session. Please use the contact form on my website or call the Morristown Studio at 973-267-1722. I hope to see you there!
I’m taking a wonderful collage class about painting with paper and I’m loving it! I have already discovered some new toys and new interpretations of old ones. One of my old favorites is using parts of napkins to capture gratitude. Sometimes they are from specific events – such as these 2 funny ones from my Religious Education teacher training last weekend. I’m really looking forward to getting to know the 5th & 6th grade children and families from my Unitarian Fellowship.
I’m going to be doing more in my gratitude journal to experiment with ideas from this class. Yesterday I went to Michael’s to get my Eclipse Mandala framed for my October show and I bought a few fun things inspired by the class. None of them are in this art journal page layout because this is from the last week. Mandala 49 is almost done and this layout includes some experiments for that.
I’m also working on some art and a brochure for a class I will be offering in October. It is designed to get you started on a Zentangle® journal practice and will include the Pre-Strung Zentangle® journal. I should have an update in the next few days on this.
Zendalas® are small mandalas made on lovely die cut circles of watercolor paper. Zentangle® patterns are used to provide a drawing meditation to fill the circle with beauty. All materials will be provided. Materials fee $5.
I have been asked about creating art parties for birthdays and other special events and I have come up with an outline of what I would like to offer.
Art Party
What we would do would depend upon your budget and how many people of what age range would be participating. Each party starts with a $50 setup fee. The most cost-effective party would consist of me bringing simple coloring pages that I would teach the people/children to Zentangle® on and then we would color them. This would cost $7/ person and I would supply everything necessary. I have artist quality pens that are appropriate for children and other pens for adults that they would keep. The most expensive art party would include each person/child getting a Zentangle® gift bag that would include a pen, pencil, tortillion, and 5 Zentangle® tiles. These are either the basic 3.5 inch Zentangle® tiles or the Apprentice® (bigger) tiles of a good quality watercolor paper that are die cut with the Zentangle® logo on the back. That would be for them to take home. I would provide 2 hours of instruction and we would decorate 2 tiles during the party. One of the tiles could be assembled into a mosaic of your child’s initial/name or an image that would be meaningful to him/her and depend on the number of participants. The participants would not know about the overall design until we put it together in the mosaic. This would be $30/person. I wouldn’t recommend this package with many children under about 9. Of course, there is a lot of room in between to see what we can put together. I would require a temperature controlled room with tables and chairs appropriate to the class. I bring my own easel and drawing board for instruction.
Samples of the first tile we would learn to draw
