The Diva, Laura Harms, is back from her summer break. She has a simple Zentangle® challenge for us today, use some combination of 2 squares as your string. I’m working on a journal for my Zentangle® Primer class I will be teaching in October. The tangle patterns that I used in this challenge are from the first lesson in that class. They are called shattuck, jetties, and bales.

To see more Zentangle® fun and my guest post from this summer check out the Diva’s challenge!

eclipse mandala

This piece is inspired by the Diamond Ring phenomenon from the eclipse. I am submitting it for a show this fall at Alhamra Art Center. This is a repurposed canvas from a painting party fundraiser. Here is my original version of the painting – it was a bunch of balloons and I made them more like flowers.

And I added some collage and some Zentangles. I’m not sure it is 100% done. I kind of want to tangle on the gold, but once it is on the canvas it is tricky. Maybe tomorrow I will post the development of the Zentangle Inspired Art – Mandala 50 of 100!

I have been asked about creating art parties for birthdays and other special events and I have come up with an outline of what I would like to offer.

Art Party

What we would do would depend upon your budget and how many people of what age range would be participating. Each party starts with a $50 setup fee. The most cost-effective party would consist of me bringing simple coloring pages that I would teach the people/children to Zentangle® on and then we would color them. This would cost $7/ person and I would supply everything necessary. I have artist quality pens that are appropriate for children and other pens for adults that they would keep. The most expensive art party would include each person/child getting a Zentangle® gift bag that would include a pen, pencil, tortillion, and 5 Zentangle® tiles. These are either the basic 3.5 inch Zentangle® tiles or the Apprentice® (bigger) tiles of a good quality watercolor paper that are die cut with the Zentangle® logo on the back. That would be for them to take home. I would provide 2 hours of instruction and we would decorate 2 tiles during the party. One of the tiles could be assembled into a mosaic of your child’s initial/name or an image that would be meaningful to him/her and depend on the number of participants. The participants would not know about the overall design until we put it together in the mosaic. This would be $30/person. I wouldn’t recommend this package with many children under about 9. Of course, there is a lot of room in between to see what we can put together. I would require a temperature controlled room with tables and chairs appropriate to the class. I bring my own easel and drawing board for instruction.

The Zentangle® tiles that have been created for drawing mandalas are called Zendalas®. They are die cut from lovely hot press watercolor paper and take the addition of shading and color so beautifully. The key to improving any skill is repetition and I have been participating in a 100 Mandalas challenge for a few years. These small Zendalas® are really rejuvenating my mandala drawing practice! I’m so excited to kick off my 100 Zendalas® challenge and I hope you will join, too!

Zendala 1

Yesterday I met with the board of the Morris County Art Association and discussed class offerings. I will have 3 opportunities to teach, mostly Zentangle®, but I will have a one day workshop on making artist trading cards.

I will be offering an in depth 8-week Zentangle® Method class for each session. The first session runs from September 14 – November 2 and will be on Thursdays from 4:30-7pm.

What is the Mandala Meet Up?  The third Saturday of each month from 2-5 pm we will meet at the Art Association Studio to create Zendalas®. Zentangle® patterns are used to provide a drawing meditation to fill the circle with beauty. All materials will be provided. Materials fee $5. Prices and full descriptions of the classes will be available on the home page of my blog. While I’m going to continue my 100 mandalas challenge, I’m going to try for 100 Zendalas® also. I’m looking forward to helping people create these little works of art.

bookmarks diva challenge

I have been wanting to create some bookmarks on a coloring page for a while and I really had fun with these. They worked well with the Diva Challenge and I had a lot of fun with my new set of 72 Prismacolor Colored Pencils. The only way to get this coloring page is to order one of my other pages from Etsy. I will send you this page as a thank you gift.

The orange and blue bookmark is a diptych – the 2 halves mirror each other. This was an interesting challenge and fun to do. Check out other tangled diptychs at the Diva’s Blog.
